BIOGRAPHY
In Henry’s work, there is a strong lineage to Bay Area figurative artist, Richard Diebenkorn, and Internationally known artist, Willem de Kooning. That said, Henry has taken the Figurative tradition to a new level. Henry does not just paint the human form, he paints the essence of humanity. The figures portrayed speak to each person in a unique way based on their current state of mind. The same painting can provoke a feeling of power and at other times evoke a sense of calm and mental clarity, sometimes even an inner-awareness of something we often try to ignore.
The talent it takes for one to portray such distinct reactions is awe inspiring. A feat that is seldom accomplished. For Henry, it is a natural ability. One that stems from his strength as a storyteller, an intuitive intellectual, and a soulful individual. Henry paints subconsciously and reaches deep into the human soul, the part that interlinks all of us as a whole.
Not only does the figure take form in Henry’s paintings, he also works in pure abstraction. However, even with abstract painting, there is a sensation of something that is universally identifiable. Through color, feelings are emitted. Often times there it is an energetic pull, a climax to a higher state of elation. This is perhaps innate for Henry in that he has the gift of conversing with the viewer stemming from his figurative painting career. It is the language he speaks through his art. The ambiguous relationship in Henry’s compositions between the familiar and the abstract is a kind of metaphor for the artist’s aesthetic rooted deeply in freedom and the impulsive. It also provides part of the work’s intense appeal.
